Although failing to make it through to the EUFA Champions League final this approaching weekend, Manchester United seemed to have found renewed passions playing with a purpose to be able to reach the Europa League finals. After going five wins and two draws in their run up to the semis, they were able to clinch the win and beat Roma to make their way into the finals today against Villarreal. United are also looking to become the fourth team to capture another Europa League title after grabbing their first by defeating Ajax back in 2017.
Kick-off takes place at 20:00 BST from the Gdansk Stadium in Gdansk, Poland, but who are the betting favourites to win and what do the odds look like?
Punters have already placed good odds on United given how strongly they’ve been performing so far throughout the tournament – scoring 18 goals over their first eight fixtures, with eight coming against Roma in the semis, they’re certainly looking to be on good form. A lot of eyes will be on 34-year-old Cavani, scoring twice in each leg of the semi-final legs against Roma and converting in seven of the last 10 games, he certainly looks to be the player to tip united ahead.
That isn’t to say Villarreal haven’t looked on form either – with some strong offensive stats, scoring at least two goals in the last nine of thirteen games, they’re certainly on striking form too. Although Moreno and Alcacer lead the team in scoring, twelve different players have contributed to the success of the team and could be the difference maker where scoring opportunities are presented, and has been why some punters have given a nod toward Villarreal clinching the finals, and with Unai Emery already having lifted the Europa League trophy three times previously, there’s a lot of motivation to do it once more.
Regardless of who you’re supporting, it will be a close game with both teams looking very strong recently – some punters have given the over-under for 2.5 goals, and although united have scored at least once in 16 straight knockout-phase games outside of England, Villarreal 12 Europa League games outside of Spain win streak leads many to favour the Spanish side. Current punter odds put United as 4/11 favourites, but anything can happen and an exciting game is certainly on hand, with the potential for a big upset if the Spanish side come through looking strong.
